Background of the Study
Telemedicine has emerged as a transformative tool in healthcare, allowing medical professionals to provide care remotely using telecommunication technologies. In emergency nursing, telemedicine offers an innovative solution to bridge the gap between patients and healthcare providers, particularly in areas where healthcare resources are limited or in situations where in-person consultations are not feasible. The integration of telemedicine in emergency care provides nurses with real-time consultation with specialists, allowing for more accurate diagnoses, quicker intervention, and enhanced patient management.
Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH), one of the leading healthcare institutions in southeastern Nigeria, plays a critical role in providing emergency care to both urban and rural populations. The emergency department at ESUTH is often faced with high patient volumes, and telemedicine can offer a way to streamline care by enabling remote consultations, follow-ups, and monitoring of patients, especially in urgent cases requiring specialist input. This could potentially improve patient outcomes, reduce waiting times, and increase efficiency in the management of emergency cases.
Telemedicine can assist emergency nurses by providing them with access to expertise, helping them to make more informed decisions quickly. In regions like Enugu, where access to healthcare professionals in specialized fields may be limited, telemedicine can play a vital role in facilitating communication and enhancing decision-making capabilities for emergency nurses. However, despite the promise of telemedicine in emergency care, the actual role it plays in the emergency nursing practice at ESUTH remains underexplored. This study aims to assess the role of telemedicine in improving the quality of emergency nursing care and its impact on patient outcomes.
Statement of the Problem (300 words)
The application of telemedicine in emergency nursing has been shown to enhance care delivery in many developed countries, but its impact in resource-limited settings like Nigeria remains largely unexamined. Enugu State University Teaching Hospital faces challenges such as overcrowding in the emergency department, limited access to specialists, and delayed interventions. Emergency nurses often rely on their training and experience to provide care, but telemedicine could provide them with the ability to access specialized medical advice remotely, potentially improving patient care.
However, the effectiveness of telemedicine in emergency nursing at ESUTH remains unclear. The hospital's existing infrastructure, technology adoption, and the readiness of the nursing staff to integrate telemedicine into their practice are crucial factors that need to be explored. There is limited research on the practical use of telemedicine in Nigerian emergency settings, particularly concerning emergency nurses’ experiences and its impact on patient care outcomes. This study seeks to address these gaps and evaluate the role of telemedicine in supporting emergency nurses in providing timely, effective care.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the current use of telemedicine in emergency nursing at Enugu State University Teaching Hospital.
2. To explore the benefits and challenges of incorporating telemedicine into emergency nursing practice.
3. To evaluate the impact of telemedicine on the quality of care and patient outcomes in the emergency department at ESUTH.
Research Questions
1. How is telemedicine currently being utilized in the emergency department at ESUTH?
2. What are the perceived benefits and challenges of telemedicine integration in emergency nursing practice?
3. How does the use of telemedicine impact the quality of emergency nursing care and patient outcomes?
Research Hypotheses
1. H₀: The use of telemedicine does not significantly impact the quality of emergency nursing care at ESUTH.
2. H₀: There is no significant relationship between the use of telemedicine and patient outcomes in the emergency department at ESUTH.
3. H₀: The challenges of integrating telemedicine into emergency nursing practice do not significantly affect its effectiveness.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the role of telemedicine in the emergency nursing practice at Enugu State University Teaching Hospital. Limitations may include variations in telemedicine infrastructure, nurses' familiarity with technology, and challenges in collecting patient outcome data due to resource constraints.
